So I still haven’t been baking much lately, but I thought I’d write about my trip to the Fayetteville Farmers’ Market this morning. My last roommate and I had this tradition where we would wake up early on Saturday mornings, go to The Little Bread Company for breakfast (cappuccinos and muffins [me] or blueberry danish [Jessi]), then go to the farmers’ market. We would walk around it a few times, each buy ourselves a flower (because let’s face it, boys don’t buy flowers for girls these days), and head home. One time I found some amazing local honey and she found some fabulous homemade jam and we felt like we hit a jack pot! An even better morning? The blueberry man was there and we each bought a big brown sack of blueberries for $4! I haven’t seen the blueberry man since that one morning, but every time I go to the market, I keep my eyes wide open for him.
This year, I keep missing the early Saturday morning alarm but I still love the market so much that I decided to make more of an effort this morning (the market is also open on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I still had a chance this morning!). I woke up and headed for the market, made a few laps, no blueberry man. Although that was disappointing, I did find my honey and…wild strawberries! So sweet and yummy, I had to buy a small container!
My purchases this morning inspired my breakfast. On relaxed mornings, I like to make steel cut oats on the stovetop instead of my usual microwave oats. So, I whipped up a bowl of steel cut oats, topped them with a couple sliced strawberries, a few pecans, a drizzle of honey, and a bit of cinnamon.
[If it wasn’t apparent by all of my substitutions, I prefer to not use sugar, so honey is something I love to cook and bake with. My favorite dinner that involves honey is a honey-glazed salmon with cous cous!]
