I love when I go on vacation and I spot a bakery that I just have to go in (for research purposes, of course…cough, cough). When we were moving my younger bro into his dorm in Chicago and exploring the city, something caught my eye: Sprinkles Cupcakes! I always jump at the opportunity to try an institution.
I ordered the “Black and White” cupcake which is a dark Belgian chocolate cake with a creamy vanilla frosting, speckled with black sparkle sprinkles. I also ordered the “Marshmallow” cupcake which is a chocolate cake, filled with a fluffy white “marshmallow” frosting and draped in thick bittersweet chocolate ganache. And I’m telling you, they really know their stuff at Sprinkles! I love when a bakery chooses to do one thing well and sticks to it, resulting in a product that is worth waiting for and worth walking back to. The cake is moist and crumbly and tastes rich and actually tastes like chocolate. The frosting is perfectly sweet and I wish I had ordered a box of frosting shots after trying just one bite. The ganache is rich but doesn’t overpower the cake and is a perfect pairing for a frosting-filled cupcake.
Overall, I was so happy that I stopped in. Sometimes it can be disappointing to try a place that everyone talks about, because all the hype can be stuck in the name. With these cupcakes, however, the cake says it all.
