Well I’ve been taking some time to work on a few personal things, so hopefully as soon as I have those under control I’ll be back on track in my little Treats world. So, apologies for that.
Gonna post a few random food pics, as always, to keep you drooling while reading!
I didn’t publish FFF last week, but I have had this nagging fitness-related problem on my brain. I need advice…on massage etiquette.
Any massage therapists out there? Or massage frequenters that read a special book about how to behave and would consider themselves to be an expert?
Ok, so I got another massage last Friday…wait…2 Fridays ago. I told the girl (lady? What do we call ourselves at our age?) that I have the worst knots of all time and wicked pain under my left shoulder blade.
She started the one hour massage…on my face. It was nice. And awkward. I was trying to keep my eyes shut and stop myself from giggling.
Then she moved to my legs.
Oh, this is nice. I didn’t realize that my legs needed this much work! I mean, they’re always sore, but I thought that was just how it is…since it IS their job to get me from point A to point B as all times. So the legs…that was nice…
But way long! So long! I was laying there, trying to be dead silent and let her do all the moving and positioning of my muscles. Should I talk? Should I tell her it feels good but I fear she won’t have enough time for my back? And how do I keep myself from groaning or screaming when she digs her elbows into my knots??
Relax. Right?
Then she starts on my back. And I can tell immediately that she’s realized her mistake. She starts digging and kneading and repositioning…and saying “ummmmm? Huh?”
Then…time was up! Knots still there! Back still a mess! Legs…relaxed.
She said something along the lines of:
“I didn’t realize how bad that would be. I’d need a whole other session just for your back and shoulders. I guess I should’ve started there. You should go home and roll on a tennis ball to release the knots.”
Thanks. So… I’ll go home and do it myself?
I should’ve spoke up…right? But she’f already started the massage when I realized she hadn’t started on my back. And she’s the expert. I didn’t want to mess up her flow.
And am I supposed to be silent? Would letting out noises be more than awkward? Do you hold your breath too, to keep from crying or whimpering? I don’t want her to say “are you ok?” every 2 seconds. The pain is a good thing! But, dang! I struggle to keep the noises of pain in!
Thoughts? Advise? What would you have done??
The Sweaty Breakdown:
Friday: “burst” circuit (when I’m traveling, I use quick, effective circuits to get in some heart-healthy exercise without taking up my whole morning! Just a few minutes and my fitness is out of the way! I learned how to put them together from Jillian Michaels and reading her books/watching her DVDs.
Saturday: morning kettle bell burst circuit
Sunday: Rest
Monday: early morning HIIT before work
Tuesday: yoga DVD
Wednesday: Rest! (I drove to St. Louis today to spend time with my parents, do some wedding stuff, and relax…recuperate.)
Thursday: I met Lindsay and did an awesome bootcamp workout! We got in a great workout (ouch! My shoulders!) then went out to dinner and got frozen yogurt! I was SO happy to make a new friend, have a fun girls night out, and not stress out a single bit! She was the NICEST and we got along SO well! I’m so excited that I have a new friend (those are few and far between…and making new ones is really hard for me, but I love it when it just works out!).

So that was my week! How was your week? What was your favorite workout this week? What was your favorite treat from the week?

wait she started with your FACE?! lol i would have been cracking up. i’ve only had a few massages in my life and usually keep quiet throughout. no idea what proper etiquette is!

Yes!!! I had an awkward smirk on my face and was squeezing my eyes closed bc I didn’t want to open them and look up at her! Haha. It was ridiculous.

Clearly she didn’t even listen to your complaints as a client. If she’s your normal go-to massage therapist, I would say something to her about it. If not, I would try a different one. One that actually does what you ask. She did good with your legs but why even focus on your face at all when that’s not what you went in for? Should have been back then legs then face if there was still time left. Woo, sorry for my little rant on your page. I just hate wasted money. At least your face is de-stressed… 😉 lol
Melissa says
No, thank you!! Seriously! I can only afford one once in a while (not as often as I should) and I NEED it to be effective because of the extent of my back pain! So I feel the same way! : )

I can not get messages!! I think they hurt! And I am so ticklish! haha. I am so obsessed with quest bars too!! I can’t live without them! I love the workouts you post! And your oats always look so yummy!! =]

Thank you 🙂

I know what you mean about massages! My boyfriend had one just ONCE and it was a horrible experience for him so bad I can’t convince he to give it another shot somewhere else. It was a Chinese woman and she went too hard on him. It’s definitely good to check around for the ones with a lot of really great reviews! And I know how comfortable it can be to speak up when they’re in the middle of the massage, but it’s always better than not being satisfied. Better luck for you next time I hope! Those treats with a twist have my mouth watering over here! Never thought of making chocolate chip cookie dough using oats- brilliant!
Melissa says
Thanks so much!!
Yeah, she wasn’t my normal girl, so I’m going to go back to the other woman who did a better job!

Were you talking massage? I am hungry from the pics! 😉 I am not expert but I would have complained to her/him – coming from an old broad here! 😉

Looking forward to that blueberry oats recipe.
That rice free sushi looked yum 🙂

Omg, so I’ve gotten PLENTY of massages, but I’ve never had them START on my face! That’s just a little weird! I’ve actually never had them start with me lying on my back even…it’s almost always: arms, legs, back, turn over, arms, face, legs, feet! I’ve had quite a few massages where they haven’t been firm enough, so I’m always sure to assure them I can handle more pressure…BUT one time, the girl I had went all Amazon woman on me and yeah, I just took it…and then I hurt for TWO DAYS! Ugh! Next time I’ll definitely say something. I mean, we have the right to speak our concerns…we are the ones PAYING FOR SERVICE! Can’t believe she told you to tennis ball yourself! Should’ve told her to take that tennis ball and sh– Now Heather, be nice! 😉
Knots or NOT (haha, pun!), damn girl, yo back be sex-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeey! LOVE that LuLU top! And I’m totally jealous since I have never ever even held a LuLu garment…I’m pretty sure just one touch would cause my wallet to shrivel up and die! Lol
Oh, and YUM to every single food item on this post (especially the sushi and fro-yo…duh!)
