I’m hot, sticky sweet
From my head to my feet…
Ow!
Don’t quote me on that. I’m notorious for my loathing of 80’s music. Yet, sometimes it’s the only thing that comes to mind. Rarely…but it can happen.
Before I brag about this screamin southern sweet and heat jam…
Ohmagahhhh are you as obsessed with the Royal Baby as I am?!
Stop being so negative and political people! Put a smile on your face and think back to the Disney childhood that made you a happy kid (and cynical adult)!
A prince! A baby prince! Bambi!!
Love, right?
Ok, now that you know my closeted love…
This jam!
Seriously, you can pour it all over anything! Chicken, omelets, celery with peanut butter…yup. Love things sweet but spicy? Thought so.
I love that it comes together in a snap (just bubble time), without pectin. I also love that it’s a perfect gift! Friends will love the fresh, sweet strawberry flavor…then the creeping heat!
Just don’t rub your eyes while you’re prepping your pepper. Just a tip. Ouch.
Strawberry Habanero Jam
(makes approximately 1 pint)
1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled, diced
1 habanero pepper
juice of ½ a small orange
2 Tbs. granulated sugar
~Dice the habanero pepper into tiny pieces. Thoroughly wash your hands.
~In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the jam ingredients. Stir over medium low heat until the strawberries start to breakdown and release their juices. Bring the jam to a bubble and stir occasionally (making sure the fruit doesn’t burn) for 20 minutes or until the jam thickens. If you like a smoother jam, use a hand-blender to blend some of the fruit.
~Pour the finished jam into your jar or several smaller jars. Set the lid on the jar and let the jam come to room temperature before tightening the seal and putting the jam in the fridge. Enjoy!

Really?! It also goes by “scotch bonnet”…it’s a few notches hotter than jalapeno. But use any chili you really love in this one!

I made some ridiculously delicious condiments today…brushetta and salsa…each with a little fruity twist! I can’t wait to share them…I just have to go through the 23967598 pictures I took first! Oy!
Don’t be hating on the 80’s music girl! I might have to challenge you to a Vogue competition! 😉

Don’t fear the spice! This one really isn’t that spicy! The sweet totally offsets it!

I have this little packet of pectin that I got for free from some food show here or there, but I swear I’ve been packing and unpacking it into my pantry for years. [Not that long, truly, as it hasn’t expired.] And yet, stovetop ‘jam’ is just so easy, and so tasty, and I’m lazy….so this kind of recipe is just what I need. 🙂 [I also use frozen fruit quite often. Because I really AM as lazy as I profess to be.]
