My Spiced Nutty Yogurt Topper is a simple yet powerful way to start your day. Simplicity shines here when you top a creamy dreamy bowl of yogurt with an amazing mix of nuts, coated in spices, coconut sugar and sea salt.
Sometimes it’s best to keep things simple.
Bowls of yogurt can become an endless mound of toppings, building on each other and getting out of control. I’m guilty. I’m the queen of fruit + granola + nuts + nut butter + a shake of cinnamon… I just can’t help it.
So today we’re going to rein it in a bit. Let’s start over.
I tried some amazing spiced nuts lately that actually belonged on a salad. They were sugary, salty and had a tiny kick of heat. They were so delicious that I wanted to hoard them (but, you know, I ate them all).
So this is my version of those amazing nuts. And they’re perfect for a cool, creamy bowl of yogurt.
A quick handful of nuts, chopped and tossed in a skillet until toasty, then coated with spices and a touch of coconut sugar and salt. Choose your favorite raw nuts that you have on hand. I grabbed some cashews, walnuts, almonds and Brazil nuts.
The pinch of cayenne is what makes these nuts so amazing. Don’t skip it. A pinch is less than 1/8 teaspoon to me…just a dab. It doesn’t make them overly spicy, it adds an ending of warmth to your bite. What an amazing way to start your day.
So let’s start over and get simple, ok? And then maybe tomorrow we’ll add some sliced pear…and a drizzle of almond butter.
- 1/3 cup chopped mixed nuts, raw
- 1 tsp. coconut oil
- 2 tsp. coconut sugar
- ¼ tsp. cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp. allspice
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- ¼ tsp.sea salt
- In a skillet over medium low heat, shake the chopped nuts around until they are starting to toast (3 minutes or so).
- Add the coconut oil to the pan and shake it around the nuts until it coats the nuts.
- Turn off the heat. Add all of the spices and shake the pan until the nuts are coated.
- Pour the nuts over a bowl of your favorite yogurt. Enjoy!
- I used cashews, almonds, walnuts and Brazil nuts.
