Time is flying and it’s already time for another big baby update! It’s Life With Canaan: 10 Months In already! So, let’s chat, I’ll spill my guts and then I’ll tell you about some baby stuffs I’m loving right now. If you are just here for the food, then that’s cool too (I have some recipes linked at the bottom)!
You wouldn’t think things could change so much in just a few weeks, but they really do! My baby is 10 months old and he looks truly like a little boy.
Canaan isn’t walking yet, it’s still very early, but he definitely pulls up to standing on EVERYTHING and then likes to let go and give mommy a heart attack. So fun!
Biting. Did I mention I felt like I was a living shark attack every hour of every day? Well he was biting me and it hurt like hell. Like, my collarbone, arms, legs, chest, fingers…everything was bruised from being bit. I tried everything: yelling, shrieking, crying, using my scary firm face, saying “no,” putting him down, blocking his mouth with my palm…yeah he didn’t care. But it has gotten better. He bites me less and I think he truly knows he’s in trouble just by the tone of my howling.
I swear he’s a sweet boy though. He giggles at everything. He has this adorable flappy hand wave and says “hi” and “bye.” Granted, he just says them randomly while we’re talking, but it’s adorable. And he gives the sweetest kisses! Like, he will grab my head and pull my mouth into his and try to fit his open mouth over my mouth and nose…sometimes he tries to lick too. It’s disgustingly wonderful.
Canaan also is getting to be quite the traveler and quite the restaurant diner. I flew with him to Chicago and Denver twice within a few weeks and he really was a trooper. He nursed, slept, bounced on my lap, looked out the window, shook a rattle…really, minimal meltdowns. Each of our trips, we ate out with my mom a lot and he really got used to eating in restaurants. I just made sure to wipe down the highchair with cleaner first, threw a highchair cover on them, and then he sat there playing with toys and eating sweet potato and banana. He was so well behaved that just this week my husband and I took him to a FINE dining restaurant and there wasn’t a single eye roll in our direction. Really! What a relief.
I can’t believe we are getting to the point where I need to be thinking about his birthday. That blows my mind. But also, his birthday is in December, we plan on moving in December, and he may just get skimped for his first birthday. I’ll definitely make him a cake and celebrate him, but it probably won’t be the big pinteresty to-do that I wish it could be. I really am sad about that.
Playing! Oh my goodness this kid is so busy and loves to play. His daddy is his favorite person right now, and when they play in his room I hear nothing but giggles. Canaan loves to jump on his daddy, squeal and laugh. He loves songs (especially if we insert his name into them) and throwing all the toys he can get his hands on. Sitting still for a second? Um, no thanks.
In fact, I can hear him crawling down the hall at this very second. He’s quick! And when he gets to where he’s going, he tries to stand up and then even crawl up whatever it is (feet off the ground = I’m terrified).
Can I get heavy for a hot sec? So, my grandmother passed away at the end of August. We’re a very private lot, so there was no service or anything like that, but Canaan and I headed to Denver when it happened. It really hit me hard and I was deeply sad, especially after we got back home. Having Canaan there every moment ended up being the best therapy for me and my whole family. He was our reason to smile, play, joke around, make silly noises, and just get out of bed in general. Having him to focus on and stay positive for really pulled me out of a hole. Yes, I stayed in bed until the middle of the afternoon for the first couple days after I was home (that’s when it hit me the hardest), but after that, I HAD to get out of bed and get back to our routine. My husband had to go to work and I had to go get that sweet boy out of his crib at 7am.
Oh, sleeping? For a little while there it was touch and go. Why was he waking up 3-4 times a night?! Such torture. Well, after a few more teeth popped in, he settled back to normal. He goes to bed around 7:30 at night and wakes up around 7am. Sometimes he wakes up once or twice, but that doesn’t bother me at all because I usually wake up in the middle of the night anyways. The nights that he sleeps 11 hours just amaze me. But…there’s a huge flipside.
He’s a terrible napper. Some days he’ll take 2 good naps for a few hours each. And then there are days where he naps for 10 minutes and then decides to power through the rest of the day. My eyes are usually bloodshot and my hair looks like I was electrocuted by the time my husband gets home. Save me! I need a break for a minute!
Finally (maybe), he is loving food! This kid will try anything and usually likes everything. Plantains, mango, black beans, sweet potatoes, delicata squash, eggs, bananas, parsnips, carrots, ground chicken, baked apple oatmeal, pumpkin oatmeal muffins, pears… this kid is a foodaholic and I can’t give it to him quick enough! He has 6 teeth at the moment and sometimes he uses them and then sometimes he just decides to start swallowing everything whole. Hopefully the chewing thing really takes off for him. Other than that, he’s still nursing and we love it.
Ok that’s all for now!
Here are the things we are loving:
Our Nuna Sena mini pack n play. I move it all over the house to keep him contained and he loves to throw all of the toys out of it. He doesn’t like being in it long, but when I’m in a pinch it’s amazing.
He still loves this Baby Einstein’s walker. I love it too because then he’s not trying to crawl into the oven.
I use my BOB jogging stroller everyday. We go to Stroller Strides mommy and me bootcamp classes in the mornings and this stroller makes running a breeze…except for the actually having to run part.
Milk Snob nursing covers that we are now using as highchair covers every time we go out to eat. My husband and I don’t eat out often but whenever I see my mom, we eat out like there’s no tomorrow.
I just ordered this Fawn Design bag. I’ll let you know how I like it after it comes in.
I’m looking for: a great white noise machine. Like, I want to use my kitchen while he is sleeping, so I need a good one. We still use the mamaroo as our noise machine, which is great, but when we move I don’t think it’ll be practical to haul around the mamaroo just to use it for white noise. I also hate that almost all commercial white noise machines turn off after 60 minutes. NO! I want him to sleep ALL NIGHT.
Breastfeeding? Here’s my favorite recipe for gluten free lactation cookies! Dip them in Tumeric Milk Coffee in the morning!
Not breastfeeding? Have 3 glasses of this Simple Fall Sangria for me!

He’s getting so big! And the sloppy wet kisses crack me up because Ave does the same thing. I’m pretty sure she’s trying to eat my chin and once she even slipped me the tongue. Disgustingly wonderful is a fantastic way to put it.
Also, I understand what it likes to be on edge waiting for the Hubby to come home. There are some days I’m pacing the floor and watching the clock like a crazy person. It’s amazing how something so small can thoroughly exhaust and some days defeat me. That being said, getting her out of the crib in the morning is still my favorite part of every day.
Canaan is so stinkin’ cute. You give me hope for eating out again. Also I’m getting ready to start Ave on foods in a week or so. Any recommendations for the first food? Aside from the rice cereal. We’re doing that now.

Eating out is just one of those things where you have to dive in and do it. Make a reservation for 5:30 or 6 so you still get home for an early bedtime, and all is well! Hopefully…
Oh food. We started with avocado! I did TINY pieces and gave them to him. The first few weeks were rough, because he would gag just knowing something “solid” was attempting to go down his throat. But then something just changed and he started shoveling it all in. We did avocado then sweet potato. I’d throw some quinoa porridge and some peas in a blender and pulse it a bit (now he just shovels peas in whole). We waited on banana till it was a 3rd or 4th food just so he gets used to veggies first and bc bananas are constipating for baby bellies. But now he loves it all. Just slow and fun was the way to go! You got this mama!

Thanks Sweets. I think we’re going to give avocado a whirl today. Fingers crossed.
