Well, when I started to get ready to make chocolate cupcakes I heard a familiar whine from the other side of the kitchen: "What about my Christmas Tree Cookies?" Oh dad, quit your whining and I'll make your darn cookies. So, cupcakes were pushed to another day.The Christmas Tree Cookie should be light green, taste like a kiss of almond, and be shaped by the cookie press my dad's mom always used, … [Read more...]
Shortbread Animal Cookies
What shall I do instead of packing for my trip tomorrow? Bake cookies! So I read a recipe for shortbread (Martha's of course) and I tweaked it by adding some milk and making it more dough-like. I know that shortbread is supposed to be crumbly, but I wanted to be able to use my new animal cookie-cutters (thank you Jacki!!). I made the dough, cut them out, and then I decorated a couple of them with … [Read more...]
Merry Christmas To All…
Well, its finals week in studentville which means... baking! Every year I spread Christmas cheer by baking goodies for all the people who were nice to me during the year (i.e. all those who came to my birthday!). This year it was a short and sweet list and they were highly rewarded. I've never made marshmallows before, so I figured this would be the perfect time to start. I read a recipe for … [Read more...]

Seven: Roasted Banana Bread Cupcakes
Ready to make a simple recipe into the most complicated feat-of-cooking-strength you'll attempt this Festivus? How can something as simple and traditional as banana bread become more high maintenance than Martha herself??I guess its my fault for buying bananas (which I never eat by themselves) for smoothies...and then my blender broke so I have nothing to do with these bananas except...banana … [Read more...]
Thanksgiving: Pie (and cornbread…)
Time for pies en masse. This Thanksgiving I made Pecan Pie (twice!) and cornbread for the stuffing (dad helped a little). It is very important to make Pecan Pie because somebody might bring a minced pie to dinner...and nobody will want to eat that, so your pie becomes the favorite! Strategy. And there was no way I could alter the Pecan Pie recipe to make it healthier (people were hovering over my … [Read more...]
Six: Spiced Cupcakes with Orange Glaze
Smells like fall! Spiced cupcakes with orange glaze are perfectly savory for a cold night. They were simple (and yes, I sifted three times like she told me to) except for a small glitch with the glaze (my brother ate the orange, so another had to be purchased). Yum...that's all I have to say about these. (I made a 1/2 batch, which made 14 cupcakes) … [Read more...]

The Croissant Chronicles: Day 3
Oh my...I think I've died and gone to heaven. Not only does my apartment smell like warm, fresh bread, but everything turned out so close to perfect! I had two pans of shaped croissants. The first pan came out looking a little "special" which is probably expected since I had no clue what I was doing (picture below). They unrolled a bit in the oven. I believe that cookbooks never give you all the … [Read more...]
The Croissant Chronicles: Day 2
Well aparently I'm geometrically challenged. I rolled out the dough and measured each side of the rectangles and made notches at the correct spots...and cut triangles. I was supposed to end up with 12 triangles, but I ended up with 14. The croissants are smaller than normal but I have more of them...so I would call that a bonus! They now are in the fridge for round 2 of proofing...until tomorrow … [Read more...]
